Gene D maximum-likelihood phylogeny places the ancestors of the α3-like group and the G4-like group within the φX174-like group. This and the slower rate of evolution of gene D suggest that the current incarnation of gene D for these other groups arose in the φX174-like group and subsequently spread to the other groups.
