Proposed role of KGOR in the anaerobic metabolism of T. aromatica. Note that three molecules of 2-oxoglutarate are formed per molecule of benzoyl-CoA reduced. Oxidation of one molecule of acetyl-CoA would be sufficient to provide the two electrons required for the reduction of one molecule of benzoyl-CoA. The surplus reduced ferredoxin which is due to the oxidation of residual acetyl-CoA is suggested to be channeled to NAD+, catalyzed by ferredoxin:NAD+ oxidoreductase.
