HPLC analysis of the culture filtrate from (left to right) 3.5 nmol (each) of authentic VM1 and VS, the S. virginiae wild-type strain, the wild-type segregant strain, the ΔvisA strain, the ΔvisA strain grown in the medium containing 1 mM 3-HPA, and the ΔvisA strain grown in the medium containing 2 mM dl-pipecolic acid.
