For shifting from high to low CO₂, cells were initially grown under air plus 10% (vol/vol) CO₂ before the CO₂ supply was turned off when the culture reached an OD₄₃₆ of about 0.3. Cells were harvested at an OD₄₃₆ of about 1 or 4 h after the shift.
