Cultures were grown photoheterotrophically in the absence or presence of 30 mM DMSO, except strain 16, which does not grow in the absence of DMSO. Error bars indicate standard errors; each bar and the value above it represent the averages of results for several independent cultures. Control plasmid pVK1403-6 yielded no β-galactosidase activity for any strain. Strains 16PHG and 16PHC had activities ranging from 5 to 8 and 4 to 10 nmol/min/mg of protein, respectively, from plasmid pVKC1 and no detectable activity from plasmid pVKCII.
