a

Proanthocyanidin detection with vanillin treatment: seed body (whole seed except chalazal area)/chalazal area; +, presence of red pigments; −, absence of red pigments.

b

Mature tt7 seeds and to a lesser extent tt6 seeds are slightly spotted.

c

The dark pigmentation of the chalazal area is more extended than with the other genotypes, and seeds appear spotted around this area for tt9, ban, tt15, and ban tt12.

d

The mutants are pale brown at harvest and darken during after-ripening until they are nearly identical to wild-type Ws-1 seeds.

e

Both tt10 tt12 and tt14 tt12 darken very little with time, like tt12 but unlike tt10 and tt14.
