Table 1:
Estimated hemolysis index (HI) required for a sample to exceed the clinical ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) threshold of 400 pg/mL, based on a linear increase in UCH-L1 concentration with hemolysis (0.227 × HI).
| Baseline UCH-L1 concentration (pg/mL) | Required increase in UCH-L1 (pg/mL) | Required HI (mg/dL hemoglobin) |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | 250 | 1,101 |
| 175 | 225 | 991 |
| 200 | 200 | 881 |
| 250 | 150 | 661 |
| 300 | 100 | 441 |
| 350 | 50 | 220 |
| 375 | 25 | 110 |
For each baseline UCH-L1 concentration, the corresponding HI value required to reach 400 pg/mL was calculated. Samples with baseline UCH-L1 concentrations below 175 pg/mL required very high HI values (> 950) to exceed the decision threshold, whereas samples with baseline concentrations of ≥ 300 pg/mL surpassed 400 pg/mL at moderate levels of hemolysis (HI < 450). The calculated increase in UCH-L1 above baseline (shown in the middle column) represents the additional concentration required to reach the pathological cut-off.
