The predicted stems of DIS-1 and DIS-2 form and are essential for in vitro dimerization. Wild-type RNA-4 (WT) and four mutant forms of this RNA were tested for dimerization after preincubation at the temperatures indicated. The mutations were designed to either disrupt (Δstem1 and Δstem2) or maintain (comp1 and comp2) base pairing in the predicted stems of DIS-1 and DIS-2, producing the hypothetical secondary structures shown at the top.
