VSV/HIV recombinant used in vaccination experiments. The genomes of VSV-rwt and the three VSV/HIV recombinants are diagrammed in a 3′-to-5′ orientation on the negative-stranded viral RNA. Additional genes are expressed from new transcription units generated by duplicating the conserved VSV transcription start and stop signals (44). VSV-Gag expresses the uncleaved Gag precursor pr55^gag, and VSV-Env expresses the env gene of the IIIb strain. VSV-GagEnv expresses both genes from different positions in the genome. The expression of all proteins in cells infected with these recombinants has been confirmed previously (15, 21, 22).
