Relaxation of a DOPC-DPPC monolayer after sequential compressions. After spreading at the continuous interface of a captive bubble, monolayers with XDPPC = 0.50 were slowly compressed at ∼2 Å2/(molecule × min) to 45 mN/m and then rapidly to 52 mN/m. Interfacial area was then held constant, while π relaxed. The pulsed compression and relaxation were repeated with time in each case set to zero at the beginning of relaxation. The superimposed shaded curves give the best fit to the data of a simple exponential function. Representative of three experiments.
