Manipulations of the cholesterol content of the membrane changed the pattern of the lateral motion of the receptors. (A) Examples of EGFR traces in cholesterol-enriched membranes encased within 1.2 μm2 boxes. The receptors covered, on average, larger areas than those covered under normal conditions. (B) Traces of the receptors in cholesterol-depleted membranes, shown within 0.5 μm2 boxes, were highly confined to nanoscale domains, with short and rare escapes.
