Less regularity in quantal release after production of Rh* can improve efficiency. The Q_count distribution represented by the solid bars is taken from Fig. 8 C. The fine dotted line without bars shows the distribution for one Rh* and is also taken from Fig. 8 C. Both distributions derive from a regular release process (N = 0.235). The distribution represented by the open bars is taken from Fig. 8 A for a random (Poisson) release process (N = 1) in response to one Rh*. In this case, the part of the Rh* distribution that is at or to the left of the threshold (Q_T = 6) is greater for Poisson release than for regular release.
