The step-function-like distribution profiles for the Zn and Hg atomic density as a function of height z above the silica surface. These were used to generate the modeled Zn and Hg XRF yield curves shown in Fig. 3. The model includes a very thin condensed layer at the liquid/solid interface followed by a very dilute bulk-solution layer with thickness tw = 5.5 μm. The values determined for the models are listed in Table 1.
