Males on reduced quality territories sired more than four times as many progeny as males on experimentally improved territories despite the fact that most females moved onto improved territories (see Fig. 1). The histogram bars show the mean (+1 SE). (B) Differences in reproductive success among males are attributable to the relative difference in male body size on adjacent territories. Males of equal body size are indicated by the vertical line at zero. Relatively larger males sired significantly more progeny than relatively smaller males (Spearman rank test, ρ = 0.36, P < 0.03).
