Growth competition of rsmE mutant cells and wild-type cells. MG1655 rsmE::kan (filled squares) and MG1655 rsmC::kan (open squares) were each mixed with equal amounts of wild-type cells and grown as described (Gutgsell et al. 2000). Cultures were diluted ~10⁶ prior to plating on LB plates to determine total cell number or on LB/kanamycin plates to determine the number of kanamycin-resistant cells. The percent of Kan^r cells was determined at each cycle. The data were normalized to 100% at cycle 0 and plotted on a logarithmic scale.
