The number of HIV-2-infected cells in baboon PBMC was determined by using the infected cell titration assay as previously described (5). Five- to ten-fold serial dilutions of 106 baboon PBMC were cocultured in a 24-well tissue culture plate with 106 human PBMC that had been stimulated with PHA. The infected cell titration cultures were monitored over a 28-day period for virus production twice weekly by using the RT assay (23). NT, not tested.
