Protein compositions of purified isolated nucleocapsids and VEEV. Purified particles were denatured in SDS sample buffer, separated on a 12% polyacrylamide- SDS gel under reducing conditions, and visualized by Coomassie blue staining. The only band observed in the nucleocapsid sample corresponded to the capsid protein, while the major bands in the VEEV sample corresponded to the E1, E2, and capsid structural proteins. Protein identities were confirmed by Western blot analysis (data not shown). The minor band migrating above 97 kDa corresponded to the E2 protein, as confirmed by N-terminal sequencing, Western blot analysis, and mass spectroscopy (data not shown).
