Comparison of the F9 operon structures in E. coli O157:H7 strain EDL933 and E. coli K-12 strain MG1655. E. coli K-12 has a natural deletion of the first part of the operon and does not express the fimbriae. The sequenced uropathogenic isolate E. coli CFT073 contains a homologous region that is 98% identical (at the nucleotide level) to the E. coli O157:H7 region (45).
