Mefloquine induces neuronal damage in specific brain stem nuclei. Neuronal degeneration, as revealed by the presence of black-stained metallic granules, occurred in the nucleus gracilis (ng) after high-dose mefloquine treatment (765 mg/kg) (A). This effect was less pronounced with the 187-mg/kg dose (B) and was not observed with controls (C). The nucleus cuneatus (nc) and solitary (sol.) tract were affected to a lesser degree.
