Cytokine production by DCs from L. monocytogenes-infected mice. Mice were infected intravenously with 5 × 10⁵ CFU of L. monocytogenes. Their spleens were obtained 48 h later, and CD11c⁺ DCs were purified as indicated in the text. DCs (10⁵/100 μl) obtained from L. monocytogenes-infected mice (In vivo LMDC) or from uninfected mice (Uninfected DC) were cultured for 24 h in the presence or absence of 10⁶ HKLM cells. Titers of IFN-γ (a) and IL-12 p70 (b) in the culture supernatants were determined. The results were reproduced in three repeated experiments. Each result represents the mean ± the standard deviation for a group of six to nine samples from three independent experiments. An asterisk indicates a significant difference from the value for the uninfected, DC-immunized group (P < 0.01).
