In each case the protein was detected by immunofluorescence using a confocal microscope with the same laser power and gain settings. In the wild-type egg chambers, during stages 5–7, Dl is enriched at the surface of germline cells, especially where they appose follicle cells (A′), and dispersed throughout the cytoplasm. The overall distribution is similar in the aret mutant, but the amount of Dl protein in or closely associated with the membranes is significantly reduced (B′).
