Expected configuration of loops forming in heteroduplex DNA. The top DNA strand contains the insertion allele of the indicated size, while the bottom strand is wild-type DNA lacking an insertion. Heteroduplex formation in this region will lead to the extrusion of the extra DNA sequence as a loop. In-frame stop codons are indicated in gray type within the insertion sequences of the 15- and 18-base loops.
