Strains were handled as described in Materials and Methods, except that the ethanol fixation time was decreased to ≈10 s to preserve cellular structure in strains carrying the recA260 mutation. Identical results were obtained with two different isolates of the ripX recA strains (IRN442 and IRN443), and results shown are cumulative. 

All data are derived from at least two experiments. The 95% confidence interval is indicated in parentheses.
