Opa phenotype of isolates from mice inoculated with OpaI Cmr and Opa− Cms gonococci. In this experiment, OpaI variants were selected in four of five mice, of which the vast majority (90 to 100%) were Cmr. Data for time points at which selection of OpaI Cmr gonococci was observed are enclosed in black boxes. Gonococci were recovered from mouse 1 only on day 1. The criterion for selection is defined in the text.
