Bold names indicate major locations of the indicated proteins; thin arrows represent vesicular transport steps; thick arrows show “default” pathways, which may correspond to compartment maturation or direct fusion. The two retrieval pathways are numbered: 1 is the route followed by GFP-Snc1p, dependent on Tlg1p and Tlg2p; 2 is the later retromer-dependent and vps4-sensitive pathway followed by Vps10p. Exactly how Vps10p reaches late endosomes—via early endosomes or by a more direct pathway—is not yet known. Although the two retrieval pathways are drawn as completely separate, they may have overlapping origins and/or a common destination. See DISCUSSION for details.
