Bacterial growth and penicillin-induced killing of the S. gordonii parent (A) and Tol1 mutant (B) monitored by viable counts and quantification of a short (119-bp) fragment of 16S rRNA. The number of amplified 119-bp fragments increased proportionally to viable counts during bacterial growth but did not decrease proportionally to bacterial killing during penicillin treatment.
