Blood bacterial counts 6 h postinfection. Three pneumococcal strains of the same ST and serotype (ST124 serotype 14) were injected by the intraperitoneal route into C57/BL6 mice (dose of 107 CFU), and the blood bacterial viable count was taken at 6 h postinfection. Each point indicates the data from an individual mouse; the horizontal bar indicates the mean (n = 11 to 12 pooled from two experiments giving similar results). The proportions indicate the number of mice that had bacteremia above the detection limit (∼log 2 CFU/ml). P values (Student's t test) relate to bacterial counts, with ≤0.05 considered significant (*).
