TABLE 3.
Concentrations of trehalose and maltose in extracts from whole nodules formed by B. japonicum (USDA 110) or B. elkanii (USDA 324)a
| Species | Concn (mg g−1 fresh weight)
|
||
|---|---|---|---|
| Total for all carbohydratesb | Trehalose (% of total) | Maltose | |
| B. japonicum | 12.0 | 0.80 (6.7) | 0.086 |
| B. elkanii | 12.4 | 2.35 (19.0) | 0.135 |
Data represent the averages of results for two nodule extracts for each species of rhizobia.
Other carbohydrates in these extracts, in decreasing order of concentration, were sucrose > d-chiro-inositol > d-pinitol ≅ glucose > myo-inositol. Fructose was not detected in these extracts. In B. elkanii nodules, trehalose ranked second in concentration level after sucrose.
