TABLE 3.

Concentrations of trehalose and maltose in extracts from whole nodules formed by B. japonicum (USDA 110) or B. elkanii (USDA 324)a

Species Concn (mg g−1 fresh weight)
Total for all carbohydratesb Trehalose (% of total) Maltose
B. japonicum 12.0 0.80 (6.7) 0.086
B. elkanii 12.4 2.35 (19.0) 0.135
a

Data represent the averages of results for two nodule extracts for each species of rhizobia.

Other carbohydrates in these extracts, in decreasing order of concentration, were sucrose > d-chiro-inositol > d-pinitol ≅ glucose > myo-inositol. Fructose was not detected in these extracts. In B. elkanii nodules, trehalose ranked second in concentration level after sucrose.
