Factors to consider in deciding a patient's suitability for invasive mechanical ventilation

• Presence of concomitant medical conditions
• Premorbid functional status
• Severity of existing airflow obstruction
• Presence of potentially reversible precipitant (such as pneumonia or pneumothorax)
• Patient and family wishes
