Temperature- and CPZ-induced fusion of GL23 (A) and HA4-23 cells (B). Neither aqueous (striped bars) nor lipid (open bars) dye redistributed when GL23 and HA4-23 were established (first columns in A and B, respectively). Increasing the temperature to 37°C for 3 min (second columns) or exposing cells to 0.5 mM CPZ for 1 min at 23°C (third columns) led to both aqueous and lipid dye spread. The extent of fusion attained by directly triggering fusion at 37°C with a 5-min, pH-4.8 exposure, followed by incubation at neutral pH for 10 min, is represented in the last columns. Bars show the SE of the mean; each experiment was repeated 4–10 times.
