(a) Infection of cells with adenovirus overexpressing native NIK protein for 24 h prior to detachment results in greater levels of phospho-IκBα than detached cells harvested at 1 h. NIK-overexpressing cells show greater levels of nuclear NF-κB (b) and less activation of caspase 3 (c) than uninfected cells or cells infected with virus expressing GFP and then detached for 24 h. (d) NIK-overexpressing detached cells do not survive in greater numbers than detached uninfected cells, measured as DiOC6 staining after 24 h.
