  • Poor thirst/reduced water intake

  • Intrarenal water loss

    • – diabetes insipidus

      • central

      • nephrogenic

    • – osmotic diuresis

    • - from respiratory tract

    • - from gastrointestinal tract

    • - fever

Increased ECF Volume
  • Iatrogenic – administration of sodium containing fluids

  • Mineralocorticoid excess

    • - primary hyperaldosteronism

    • - Cushing’s syndrome

    • - exogenous
