TABLE 2.

Numbers of DCs in the gastric mucosa of nTx mice that were infected or not infected with H. pylori

DCs Location No. ina:
Noninfected nTx mice H. pylori-infected nTx mice
Myeloid Surface epithelium 0.2 ± 0.1 0.7 ± 0.2b,c
Upper portion of lamina propria 0.1 ± 0.1 5.0 ± 0.7b,c
Middle portion of lamina propria 0.3 ± 0.2 1.9 ± 0.4b,c
Bottom portion of lamina propria 2.9 ± 0.4 2.4 ± 0.3
Lymphoid Surface epithelium 0.1 ± 0.1 0.1 ± 0.1
Upper portion of lamina propria 0.0 0.0
Middle portion of lamina propria 0.1 ± 0.1 0.2 ± 0.1
Bottom portion of lamina propria 2.0 ± 0.2 1.8 ± 0.3
a

The total number of positive cells in five continuous gastric gland units was counted in five different regions in one frozen section at 14 weeks after birth (8 weeks after H. pylori infection). Each group consisted of five animals, and the mean ± standard error of the mean was calculated for each group.

b

Significantly greater than corresponding values for noninfected nTx mice (P < 0.01).

c

Significantly greater than the number of lymphoid DCs in the same location (P < 0.01).
