Strains in Experiment I, rIIIΔ; Experiment II, rnc14∷Tn10. Induction is for 1 hr at 42°C. Values indicate β-galactosidase activity in Miller units (22). NusBΔ strains are cs. In Experiment II, therefore, strains were grown to mid-log at 37°C prior to shifting to 42°C for 1 hr.
