^aThe levels of transcription of the prgI and prgJ reporter gene fusions in the different strains were monitored by assaying the levels of catechol-2,3-dioxygenase activity in bacterial lysates. Cells were grown under inducing conditions to an OD₆₀₀ of 0.8 and lysed by sonication, and the levels of catechol-2,3-dioxygenase activity were determined as previously described (5). Values are means and standard deviations of one experiment performed with triplicate samples. Equivalent results were obtained in several repetitions of this experiment. ND, not determined.
