Identification of bacteriophage induction during growth with mitomycin C. S. canis strain 39126 was grown alone or in the presence of mitomycin C (added at the early-logarithmic-growth phase) at a final concentration in broth of 0.5 μg/ml. The arrow indicates the time of addition of mitomycin C. At timed intervals, the culture medium was examined for induction by determining the optical densities of the control culture (○) and the culture with added mitomycin C (▴).
