Each dot represents the height of one bead on the TM when the TM is bathed in AE. The shaded (+) symbols show the height of the same beads when the TM is immersed in AE plus PEG. A concentration of PEG, with a molecular mass of 511 kDa, was used to produce an osmotic pressure of 10 kPa. Radial distance was measured from the outer edge toward the modiolus.
