The mitochondrial respiration decreased in the presence of sodium chloride or sodium lactate in a concentration-dependent manner, respectively. Each value represents the mean±s.e.mean of five measurements. †Significantly different from the control group (Cont; P<0.05). The right panel represents the effect of propranolol on mitochondrial state 3 respiration in the absence (upper panel) and presence of 25 mM sodium lactate (lower panel). Treatment of isolated mitochondria with various concentrations (10 to 100 μM) of propranolol did not change the basal state 3 respiration. Sodium lactate-induced deterioration of mitochondrial activity was also unaffected in the presence of various concentrations of propranolol.
