Effect of M826 on the number of neurones expressing active caspase-3 in the injured striatum. Coronal sections taken at six levels throughout the striatum and adjacent to that used for the quantification of lesion volume were processed for the immunodetection of the active form of caspase-3. Caspase-3-positive neurones were counted at each level (see Methods and Figure 3 legend for details). M826 significantly reduced the number of cells expressing active caspase-3 (P=0.011; n=12 rats per vehicle- or M826-treated group).
