Basophils were purified by immunomagnetic bead separations and then challenged with IL-3 (100 ng ml⁻¹) for 24 h, after which, supernatants were harvested and evaluated for cytokine generation. In parallel, the residual mononuclear cell preparations, containing basophils^*that had not been captured by the purification step, were also challenged with IL-3. Values are means±s.e.m., n=3.
