The 100-day period corresponds to that labeled A in Fig. 1. This period was characterized by constant loading (1,189 mg of N liter−1 day−1 or 8,307 mg of N m−2 day−1). Values are given as mean ± standard deviation (n = 37). The influent NH4+-N concentration was 840 mg of N liter−1, and the flow rate was ca. 62 liters day−1.
