A schematic diagram of the heparin binding delivery system (HBDS). The α2PI1-7-ATIII121-134 peptide is covalently crosslinked to the fibrin scaffold by Factor XIIIa. The peptide also binds heparin via electrostatic interactions. Heparin can bind growth factors such as bFGF, NGF, or NT-3, thereby sequestering the growth factors into the fibrin scaffold and limiting their loss from the scaffold by diffusion.
