a

The data were obtained by a cytometric bead array analysis. The values are means ± standard deviations for eight WT animals, seven gp91−/− animals, and three p47−/− animals. All parameters were significantly elevated in WT animals challenged with heat-inactivated R6 pneumococci compared to the values obtained for saline-treated controls (P < 0.05, as determined by a Mann-Whitney U test).

b

Significantly different (P < 0.01) than the value obtained for WT animals.

c

Significantly different (P < 0.05) than the value obtained for WT animals as determined by an unpaired t test.
