From the model of Huang et al. (18), the oscillation period versus the MinE-stimulated MinD-ATPase rate, σde, on a log-log scale. Shown are results for a 4-μm-long bacterium and a 10-μm-long bacterium (filled circles and open squares, respectively). A strong decrease of oscillation period with increasing ATPase rate is seen. The longer periods for 10-μm-long bacteria with smaller or larger σde are associated with end-to-end oscillation, while intermediate σde values exhibit a symmetric breathing mode pattern. The inset shows the inverse time between MinD bindings (rebinding rate, in 1/s) versus σde.
