The figure presents a simplified version of the endocytic compartment comprising two classes of clathrin-coated vesicles and TbRAB11-positive structures involved in recycling of VSG. The white cisternae close to the lysosome represent a hypothetical, late endosomal compartment, which may be the target for class II clathrin-coated vesicles. Structures corresponding to early endosomes are not depicted because they have not yet been defined on the ultrastructural level.
