Unless otherwise indicated, strain JM101 bearing a nanA-lacZ fusion was grown in minimal E medium and 0.5% Casamino Acids with glycerol as the carbon source at 0.4% final concentration or with the indicated sugar added to a final concentration of 2 mg/ml. The results are the averages of three independent measurements±standard deviations.

JM101 carrying the nanA-lacZ fusion and either nanR6 or nanR7 was grown in MOPS (morpholine propanesulfonic acid) medium at 30°C with 0.2% glucose or 0.4% glycerol. The results are the means of two independent cultures. Abbreviations are defined in the text.
