Cells were seeded and cultured for 48 h in isotonic (0.3osmol (kg H2O)−1) medium before being transferred to a hypertonic (0.5, 0.6 or 0.7osmol (kg H2O)−1) medium. Osmolality was adjusted with sucrose. Culture was then continued for the indicated times and cell growth estimated by measurement of the amount of cell protein.
