Cells were incubated for 24 h in medium of the indicated osmolality and cell density was measured in terms of the amount of protein per unit area (○). The cells were then transferred to medium of 0.7osmol (kg H₂O)⁻¹ and incubated for a further 24 h before cell density was again measured (•). Osmolality was adjusted with sucrose. Mean values (±s.d.) from three measurements are given.
