The source gives the number of students per quarter (three-month period). In most cases, the number was the same for both quarters, or given for only one of the two quarters. For the three semesters where the numbers for the two quarters differed by one, the table gives the higher figure. For the two semesters where the numbers of the two quarters differed by two, and for one semester, where the numbers of the two quarters differed by four, the table gives the average.
The courses for midwives usually lasted three months. Since we do not know the exact dates in most years, it is difficult to tell to what extent the same midwives are counted as using the lying-in hospital, in two subsequent quarters. Cf. note 103 of the text.
The source gives a total of 16 midwives for the whole of 1815.
