Spatial coexistence of peri-infarct sympathetic nerves with myofibroblasts and macrophages at post-ligation day 7. Tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive nerves (red) are abundant within the peri-infarct region. These fibers associate with accumulations of myofibroblasts (green), as revealed by α-smooth muscle actin immunostaining in the adjacent section. Macrophages are also concentrated in the same regions of the tissue, as indicated by MAC1-immunostaining (blue) in an adjacent section. Note that sympathetic axons are most abundant in regions containing both macrophages and myofibroblasts. Scale bar = 30μm.
